Topless Sunbathing: Every year thousands of women rush to Turkey ‘s beaches and pools. The first day is filled with visions of getting tan kissed by a golden light. Towels are laid on sunbeds, the oil is rubbed onto pearly white skin, then the top of the bikini comes off and they lie back to relax as they move around the planet.
There is limited public debate about sunbathing without a bikini top. Women who disagree with it keep their own thoughts for fear of being called a prude. Women who agree with it insist that the world has moved on and it’s just a t * * * * pair. Whatever camp you live in doesn’t concern me, but I strongly believe women shouldn’t sunbathe without a top bikini.
Sunbathing Topless in Turkey
Now, if you’re a woman doing this, I’ve heard you cussing and yelling at me already. It’s your right to get a beautiful tan without hideous white strap marks which will make you commit the most ridiculous faux pas fashion known to man.
I hear you girl, exactly the same thing I used to do. In my nine years in Turkey, however, I was fortunate enough to see life from the point of view of the tourist but more so from the point of view of the local. As a tourist in Turkey, you might believe that nobody bats an eyelid when a woman sunbathes without a bikini top but you shape opinions behind the scenes and, for two reasons, those opinions are not that you have a fantastic sun tan.
Topless Sunbathing: Typically it is done in tourist resorts that adorn the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts to take your bikini off top. Anyone may argue that these tourist resorts are man-made money-making machines built to keep the holiday makers happy while they are taking your money. We will care for any need you have, and let you do whatever you want, even though it goes against their leaders and their education.
Remember, though, that Turkey is a Muslim country, and while that young Turkish man who walks around in Nike shoes and sings like a rap star may seem modern and Westernized, the thoughts in his head are the opposite. These young lads usually come from small villages where a girl is likely to get her thrown out of the village or committed to mental health therapy for the rest of her life showing her assets in public.
So imagine a young naïve lad, leaving his home village in the coastal resorts to find jobs. He finds a job in a hotel and a woman, laying on a sun bed, orders a coke on his first day. He is struggling to write down the word on his order pad, because he can’t take her riches off his mind. He is nervous and ashamed. This conflicts with every principle with which he was bought up.
Now the young lad gets used to it. He isn’t even going to give a second glance by the end of the summer. What won’t shift though is his view that it’s simple for western people. There’s a convergence between two different cultures here that 99 percent of the time is so different and any effort to justify sunbathing without the upper half being protected would collide with a brick wall.
Even the young naïve lad who is so used to it by the end of the season will tell you privately that his wife or sister will never be seen showing off her assets in public. The women who do that are quick and unwilling to complain when they are molested by men. So, if you want to be respectful of local cultures, and if you don’t want to be known as an simple west guy, then the best advice I can give you is to forget about sunbathing topless in Turkey.
